Students (beginning to advanced)

I thoroughly enjoy teaching students of all ages.

  • Children ages 9-10: We have a lot of fun during lessons. We sing lots of songs (songs from Sesame Street, Disney Movies and good old classics like "Take Me Out to the Ballgame). We learn to feel and express the music through movement, and we learn basic music reading and rhythm skills by playing the piano and percussion instruments. Vocal technique (how to breath, good support etc.) is discovered through activities and vocal play.

  • Youth ages 11-14: We still learn lots of enjoyable songs and start with a few of the easier classical and Broadway songs. It's a good time to start focusing on the basics of good vocal technique like proper breathing. Boys with changing voices will enjoy songs that are cleverly designed to make the transition easier.

  • Youth ages 15-18: Students in this age-group usually have specific goals/dreams they are working toward, for example: auditioning for the high school musical or select choir, singing in a band, or performing in church or local community events. Whatever the goal is, we will start working toward it immediately. We also start a more in depth study of vocal technique and can begin singing in Italian (the magical language for learning how to sing) or looking more seriously at the Broadway repertoire. Lessons are exciting as new things are discovered and mastered each week.

  • Adults: Singing lessons is one area of music study where studying as an adult is often more advantageous than studying as a child. Voices don't reach full maturity until around 30 years of age and get even better around 40. Adults pick up the technical concepts involved in singing quite quickly and enjoy the "me-time" that lessons and developing a new talent provide. We have a great time together discovering how good vocal technique can help with all those hard parts of singing (like the high notes) and experiencing how fun, free and easy singing can be.
